in 1780 in Chittiko, Cherokee Nation East (now ,Monroe, TN).5 He died in 1847 in ,Going Snake District, Cherokee Nation,

EMS says that James MARTIN was taken to Virginia to be raised by his father,
but was a disappointment to his family. This seems to be somewhat substantiated
by an article edited by Adelaide Lisetta Fries in the North Carolina Historical
Review in which she is quoted as follows:
"[10 NOV 1799] A half-Indian, Martin, son of General Martin with whom Br.
Schneider stayed formerly in Chittiko, arrived today. We asked him if he remembered
the visit of Br. Schneider sixteen years ago? He said no, that he was born in
Chittiko, but was only nineteen years old now, and therefore was very young at
that time. He told us that his father was now in Henry County, Virginia, and
that his mother was living in Wakowee on the Hiwassee River; he asked us to visit
her as he knew that our visit would please her and she would be happy to serve
us. We heard later, that he, like Price, did not have the best character, and
that they like to drink brandy."
In his book EMS says that James had no children, but in some of his earlier,
unpublished records he lists the following sons, all by different unnamed mothers;
Samuel MARTIN (father of Belle MARTIN who married James COLLINS, and Elizabeth
MARTIN), Wiley MARTIN and Joseph MARTIN (who married Melvina Bateman and Fannie
Biggs). It seems possible that further research into records might shed some
light on this information.
James served as a quartermaster during the Creek War of 1813-1814.
